Mardi Gras is the first of Carnival's Excel class and, frankly, one of the most ambitious ships the line has ever built. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), she's greener than her predecessors and bigger — at 181,808 gross tonnes she was Carnival's largest ship at launch. Six themed zones replace the traditional lido deck layout: French Quarter, La Piazza, Summer Landing, The Lido, Grand Central, and Brasserie de Paris each have a distinct character and their own food and drink offerings. And then there's BOLT — the world's first roller coaster at sea, a thrilling electric coaster on the top deck that's become Carnival's most-photographed feature.

✦ The standout feature

BOLT: The Ultimate Sea Coaster — a 40 mph electric roller coaster on the top deck. Guests ride single or tandem two-person pods along 800 feet of track, banking over the ship's edge with ocean views on both sides. It costs $15 per ride and books up fast; reserve immediately after boarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the BOLT roller coaster cost?
BOLT costs $15 per ride per person. It's popular and can get busy, so book your ride time in the Carnival HUB app as soon as you board. The ride lasts about 1 minute and the coaster seats two people per pod.
What is the zone concept on Mardi Gras?
Mardi Gras is divided into six distinct zones each with their own personality, décor, and food & drink options: French Quarter (New Orleans-inspired), La Piazza (Italian), Summer Landing (outdoor, casual), The Lido (classic pool deck), Grand Central (the heart of the ship), and Brasserie de Paris (French-themed premium). It means the ship feels more like a city than a single venue.
Is Mardi Gras family-friendly?
Very much so. Camp Ocean kids club covers ages 2–17, WaterWorks has slides and splash zones for all ages, and there are family dining options throughout the zones. The BOLT coaster has a minimum height requirement of 54 inches.
What is special about Mardi Gras being LNG powered?
Mardi Gras runs on liquefied natural gas, which reduces sulphur emissions by virtually 100%, nitrogen oxide by 85%, and CO₂ by 20% compared to conventional heavy fuel oil. She also has a cold-ironing capability for shore power at compatible ports.
