St. Vincent (Kingstown)

Gateway to the Grenadines — volcanic peaks, the oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere, and the Tobago Cays marine park.

Overview

St. Vincent is the main island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a 32-island chain stretching south towards Grenada. Kingstown, the capital, is a working Caribbean port town with a lively central market, botanical gardens (the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, established 1765), and colourful colonial-era buildings. St. Vincent itself is dramatically volcanic and lush — La Soufrière, the active stratovolcano dominating the north of the island, erupted as recently as 2021. But St. Vincent's greatest draw is its position as the jumping-off point for the Grenadines: Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, and the Tobago Cays — a marine park of uninhabited islands with some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Eastern Caribbean.

Top Beaches

Villa Beach

The most popular beach near Kingstown — calm water, lined with beach bars and restaurants. 20 min by taxi from the port.

Indian Bay Beach

Pretty sheltered bay just south of Villa. Calm, clear water with good snorkelling on the rocks at the bay's edge.

Tobago Cays Marine Park

In the Grenadines — an uninhabited chain of islands with world-class coral reefs and hawksbill turtle nesting. Accessible only by day-sail excursion from St. Vincent.

Must Eat

Roasted Breadfruit with Jackfish

St. Vincent's national dish — roasted breadfruit (starchy, smoky, filling) served with salted jackfish. A Vincentian breakfast institution.

Callaloo Soup

A rich, green, coconut-milk-based soup made from dasheen leaves with crab, dumplings, and okra — deeply flavoured and genuinely nourishing.

Fresh Sorrel Drink

Hibiscus petals steeped with ginger, cinnamon, and lime — deep red, tart, and refreshing. Sold in glass bottles from market vendors.

💡 DIY Tip

Walk from the port to the St. Vincent Botanical Gardens — the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, completely free, and home to a breadfruit tree descended from the original brought by Captain Bligh in 1793. Then explore the Kingstown market for local spices and produce. Bequia is reachable by local ferry ($10, 1 hour) if you want to explore independently.

🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict

The Tobago Cays are unmissable and require a full-day sailing excursion — this is St. Vincent's headline experience and 100% worth booking as a ship tour. Kingstown town and botanical gardens are very easy independently. La Soufrière volcano hike requires a guide and significant fitness — book as a ship excursion.
