St. Lucia
The twin Pitons, the Caribbean's most dramatic landscape, and a drive-in volcano.
Overview
St. Lucia is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean — and arguably the most dramatic. The twin volcanic peaks of Gros Piton (798 m) and Petit Piton (743 m) rise straight from the sea near the town of Soufrière and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site visible from miles offshore. The island has it all: dense rainforest, a drive-in volcano with bubbling sulphur springs, thermal mud baths, world-class snorkelling beaches, and a strong Creole food culture. Ships dock at Castries (the capital) or at Soufrière for smaller vessels.

Must Eat
Green Fig & Saltfish
St. Lucia's national dish — boiled green bananas with salted codfish, tomato, and onion. A local staple.
Roti
Curry-filled flatbread wrap — a Caribbean standard elevated in St. Lucia. Get the conch or chicken version from street stalls.
Creole Fish
Grilled or stewed fresh catch in a tomato-pepper Creole sauce. At any local restaurant in Castries or Soufrière.
💡 DIY Tip
Hire a licensed taxi driver for the day ($80–100 for a shared taxi, $150+ private) and ask for the Soufrière route: Sulphur Springs drive-in volcano → Diamond Botanical Gardens and waterfall → Anse Chastanet beach. It's the best way to see the island's highlights without relying on ship pricing.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
St. Lucia is one of the harder Caribbean islands to explore independently — mountainous roads, limited public transport, and distances make a guide or driver genuinely useful. A ship excursion or pre-booked taxi tour is recommended, especially for anything involving Soufrière and the Pitons.
