Roatán
The Caribbean's best-value diving — pristine Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, West Bay Beach, and jungle zip-lines.
Overview
Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, sitting on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-longest barrier reef in the world. For divers, it's one of the most celebrated spots in the Caribbean: crystal-clear water, dramatic wall dives, abundant marine life, and some of the lowest dive prices anywhere. But Roatán is far more than diving. West Bay Beach is a genuinely spectacular stretch of white sand and turquoise water, the jungle interior has excellent zip-line canopy tours, and the warm Honduran hospitality is genuine. Cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay (purpose-built pier) and at the older Coxen Hole terminal.

Top Beaches
West Bay Beach
The island's showstopper — 1 km of talcum-white sand, gin-clear water, and the reef just 10 metres offshore for snorkelling. Get here early before ships crowd it.
West End Beach
The dive hub of the island — more local, less manicured. Excellent snorkelling from shore, dive shops on every corner.
Sandy Bay
Calmer and less visited than West Bay. Good for families. The Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences is here — swim with dolphins.
Must Eat
Sopa de Caracol
Conch soup cooked in coconut milk with yuca and plantain — Honduras's national dish and a Roatán staple at any local restaurant.
Baleadas
Thick flour tortillas stuffed with refried beans, cheese, and sour cream — the ultimate Honduran street food, served all day for $1–3.
Fresh Grilled Lobster
Local Caribbean lobster grilled whole and served with rice and beans — extraordinary value compared to other Caribbean islands. At Cannibal Café or any West End shack.
💡 DIY Tip
Take a water taxi from the dock at West End to West Bay Beach ($5 each way, 5 min) — it's cheaper and more flexible than any ship excursion. Rent snorkel gear at the beach ($10/day) and swim straight out to the barrier reef. You'll find coral, parrotfish, and sea turtles within 100 metres of shore, no boat needed.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
West Bay Beach and West End are very DIY-friendly. Book a ship excursion for diving certifications or guided reef dive tours (equipment and certified guides are essential for the deeper wall dives), or for the popular zip-line canopy adventures in the jungle interior.
