Ocho Rios

Waterfall climbing, reggae rhythms, jerk chicken, and lush jungle in the heart of Jamaica.

Overview

Ocho Rios on Jamaica's north coast is one of the most vibrant and activity-packed cruise ports in the Caribbean. The surrounding Blue Mountains and rainforest make it a paradise for waterfalls, zip-lines, and river tubing. Dunns River Falls — where you climb a 600-foot natural waterfall with a chain of strangers — is one of the most unique experiences in the Caribbean. The town itself is busy and hustler-heavy near the pier, but once you're away from it, Jamaica is unforgettable.

DIY Port Logistics: "From Pier to Town"

The first 30 minutes can make or break your port day. Use this quick plan to exit the terminal fast and avoid overpriced transport mistakes.

Is it walkable?
The pier is near town, and nearby shops are walkable. For major attractions, use a taxi to save time.
Water taxi or cheap local shuttle?
No regular water taxi model for cruise arrivals. Use licensed taxis or shared route taxis from the port exit.
Expected taxi rate to the main beach
Expect about $8-12 each way to Dunn's River Falls and about $20-30 each way to farther beach zones.
Are ride-shares legally permitted at the pier?
Ride-shares are not consistently permitted at cruise pickup points. Use official port taxis and confirm round-trip terms.

Top Beaches

Dunn's River Falls Beach

The beach at the base of the falls is small but beautiful. Combined with the waterfall climb it's the best bang for your time.

James Bond Beach

Named for the GoldenEye films shot nearby. Peaceful, well-maintained, with a beach bar and watersports.

Mallards Beach

Right in Ocho Rios town, easy walk from the pier. Good for a quick dip.

Must Eat

Jerk Chicken

Buy it from a roadside barrel grill — not from the pier-side tourist traps. Scotchie's near town is excellent.

Ackee & Saltfish

Jamaica's national dish — scrambled ackee fruit with saltcod, onion and scotch bonnet. Try it at any local diner.

Jamaican Patties

Flaky pastry filled with spiced meat — the $1 version from a local bakery beats any restaurant version.

💡 DIY Tip

Book Dunn's River Falls directly at the gate ($25) rather than through the ship — same experience, half the price. Come early (8am) before the crowds. Then take a shared taxi ($3) to Scotchie's for the best jerk chicken you'll ever eat.

🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict

Dunns River Falls is easy to do independently. Book a ship excursion for combination tours (falls + river tubing + beach) or for Blue Mountains coffee tours, which require transport further afield.
