Mykonos
Iconic windmills, whitewashed Cycladic architecture, and the most glamorous island in Greece.
Overview
Mykonos is the jewel of the Cyclades — a cluster of blinding-white cubic buildings cascading down to a sparkling harbour, with five iconic 16th-century windmills overlooking the waterfront neighbourhood of Little Venice. It's the most glamorous and photogenic of the Greek islands, with world-class beach clubs, designer boutiques, and some of the finest seafood restaurants in the Aegean. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers into the Old Port; note that high summer (July–August) brings intense crowds, punishing heat, and Meltemi winds that can delay tenders. The ancient sacred island of Delos — one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece — is a short boat ride away.

Must Eat
Lobster Pasta
Mykonos is famous for lobster spaghetti — try it at a table overlooking the sea in Little Venice. Pricey but worth it.
Kopanisti Cheese
A pungent, peppery local sheep's milk cheese — unique to Mykonos. Available at any of the town's small grocery shops.
Loukoumades
Fresh honey-drenched doughnuts from street stalls in the Chora — the best fast food in the Cyclades.
💡 DIY Tip
Arrive early in Mykonos Town (Chora) before the crowds build. Walk behind Little Venice into the Kastro quarter for the best views of the windmills and the most photogenic spots. Take a local bus (€2) to the beaches in the afternoon — it's cheaper and more flexible than ship excursions. Sunsets from Little Venice are spectacular.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Mykonos Town is extremely walkable — skip any city ship tour. The unmissable ship excursion is Delos island: the uninhabited ancient sanctuary (birthplace of Apollo) is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and only reachable by boat. It's not DIY-friendly on a tender day.
