Juneau
Alaska's capital city — glaciers, bears, whale watching, and wilderness right from the pier.
Overview
Juneau is the only US state capital inaccessible by road — you can only arrive by sea or air. That isolation has kept it wild. Mendenhall Glacier is just 12 miles from downtown; humpback whales feed in the surrounding waters all summer; brown bears fish for salmon in season. It's the most dramatic natural port call on any Alaska cruise.

DIY Port Logistics: "From Pier to Town"
The first 30 minutes can make or break your port day. Use this quick plan to exit the terminal fast and avoid overpriced transport mistakes.
- Is it walkable?
- Yes for downtown. For glacier and trail areas you need bus, shuttle, or taxi after leaving the pier.
- Water taxi or cheap local shuttle?
- City buses and dedicated glacier shuttles are the best value from downtown transit points.
- Expected taxi rate to the main beach
- Expect about $25-40 each way to Mendenhall Glacier area, depending on stop and wait time.
- Are ride-shares legally permitted at the pier?
- Ride-share coverage is limited and can be surge-prone on ship days. Shuttle and taxi queues are usually more predictable.
Top Beaches
Sandy Beach (Douglas Island)
Short drive or ferry from downtown. Views of the Gastineau Channel. More of a scenic stop than a swim beach.
Must Eat
Dungeness Crab
Freshest crab you'll ever eat — try Tracy's King Crab Shack right at the pier. The wait is worth it.
Salmon Chowder
Rich, creamy, and loaded with wild Alaskan salmon. At any local diner.
Halibut Fish & Chips
Thick, flaky wild halibut. Better than anything you'll get on the ship.
💡 DIY Tip
Take the $2 city bus (route #3 or #4) to Mendenhall Glacier — it's spectacular and free to view. Walk the 1.5-mile trail to Nugget Falls for the best views. Save money compared to ship glacier tours ($60–80+) for the same experience.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Whale watching is best booked through the ship or a reputable local operator — they know where the whales are feeding and have faster boats. Glacier tours are worth booking too if you want helicopter landings on the ice.
