Grenada (St. George's)
The Spice Isle — nutmeg, Grand Anse Beach, lush rainforest, and the Caribbean's most picturesque harbour capital.
Overview
Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands and one of the most beautiful and least spoiled islands in the Caribbean. Known as the Spice Isle, it produces more nutmeg per square mile than anywhere else on earth — along with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and mace. The capital, St. George's, built around a horseshoe harbour called the Carenage, is widely considered the most picturesque port capital in the Caribbean: a hillside of pastel Georgian townhouses rising above a natural harbour backed by dramatic green mountains. Grand Anse Beach, two miles of perfect white sand just south of the capital, is one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean.

Top Beaches
Grand Anse Beach
Two miles of pristine white sand with calm turquoise water. Consistently ranked in the Caribbean's top 5. 15 min by bus ($1 ECD) or $10 taxi from the pier.
Morne Rouge (BBC Beach)
Quieter bay just south of Grand Anse. Calmer water, fewer visitors, a local favourite for snorkelling.
Magazine Beach
Less developed, more secluded. Good snorkelling on the reef just offshore. West of the airport.
Must Eat
Oil Down
Grenada's national dish — a rich one-pot stew of breadfruit, salt meat, callaloo, dumplings, and coconut milk, slow-cooked until the coconut milk is absorbed. Found at any local restaurant.
Lambi (Conch) Curry
Curried conch — firm, chewy, deeply spiced with local nutmeg and cinnamon. Try it at BB's Crabback on the Carenage for the best version.
Nutmeg Ice Cream
Only in Grenada — ice cream flavoured with freshly grated local nutmeg. Available at beachside vendors and from the Grenada Chocolate Company.
💡 DIY Tip
Walk the Carenage from the pier — the historic waterfront is free and beautiful. Then take the local minibus ($1–2 ECD) to Grand Anse Beach for the morning. On the way back, stop at the Spice Market on the Esplanade for fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, and mace at genuine local prices. The whole day costs under $20 USD.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
St. George's and Grand Anse are very easy to do independently. Book a ship excursion for Grand Etang National Park waterfall hikes (transport is essential — the roads are steep and winding) or for spice plantation tours in the island's interior. These require organised transport and are hard to arrange independently on a port day.
