Flåm

A tiny village at the end of Norway's most scenic fjord — and the starting point of one of the world's great railway journeys.

Overview

Flåm sits at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the mighty Sognefjord — Norway's longest fjord (204 km) and the deepest in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village itself has fewer than 400 permanent residents, but it ranks among Norway's most visited destinations because of the Flåmsbana (Flåm Railway) — a remarkable feat of engineering that climbs 865 metres in just 20 km through waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and mountain passes, before ending at the mountain station of Myrdal. Cruise ships dock right at the village; the railway station is literally steps from the gangway. The surrounding Nærøyfjord (a narrower arm of the Sognefjord) is widely considered the most dramatic fjord scenery in Norway.

Must Eat

Smoked Fjord Salmon

Wild-caught and cold-smoked locally — buy vacuum-sealed portions at the harbour stalls to take home. The freshest smoked salmon you'll ever taste.

Rømmegrøt

Traditional Norwegian sour cream porridge topped with butter, cinnamon, and sugar — a mountain farmhouse staple, warming after a cold fjord day.

Flåm Cider & Craft Beer

Ciderhuset in Flåm makes excellent apple cider using local fruit. The Ægir Brewery nearby brews Norse-themed craft beers.

💡 DIY Tip

Buy a Flåmsbana round-trip ticket directly at the station (NOK 450–500 return) — no need to book through the ship. The round trip takes about 2 hours, passing the Kjosfossen waterfall stop where traditional music plays. In summer, consider hiking back down the Rallarvegen cycling path (3–4 hours, signed trail) for spectacular views not seen from the train.

🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict

The Flåm Railway is straightforward to book independently at the station and doesn't require a ship tour. The only worthwhile ship excursions here are kayaking on the Nærøyfjord (world's narrowest fjord — spectacular from water level) or guided hikes with wildlife naturalists.
