Dubrovnik
The Pearl of the Adriatic — medieval walls, Game of Thrones filming locations, and crystal-clear sea.
Overview
Dubrovnik's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in Europe. Entirely encircled by 16th-century limestone walls, the city juts dramatically into the Adriatic. It's also famous as King's Landing from Game of Thrones. Cruise ships dock at Gruž harbour, a short bus or taxi ride from the Old Town gates.

Top Beaches
Banje Beach
Closest beach to the Old Town, 5 min walk from Ploče Gate. Clear water, sun loungers for hire.
Lokrum Island
Short ferry from the Old Town harbour ($15 return). Clothing-optional lagoon, peacocks roaming free.
Sveti Jakov Beach
Rocky but beautiful. Down a staircase below the city walls — much less crowded.
Must Eat
Black Risotto (Crni Rižot)
Squid-ink risotto — a Croatian coastal staple. Try Konoba Dubrava for an authentic version.
Peka
Meat or seafood slow-cooked under a bell. Book ahead — this takes hours to prepare.
Rozata
Dubrovnik's crème caramel — lighter than the French version, flavoured with Rožata liqueur.
💡 DIY Tip
Walk the Old Town walls first thing in the morning (opens 8am) before the crowds arrive — it's 2 km around and takes 1–1.5 hours. Then explore the Old Town lanes and take the cable car up Mount Srđ for panoramic views.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
The Old Town is very walkable. Skip the ship tour for the city itself. Consider a ship excursion only for Mostar (Bosnia) day trips or Montenegro wine tours — these destinations are hard to reach independently.
