Dominica (Roseau)
The Nature Isle of the Caribbean — volcanic hot springs, ancient rainforest, and whale watching unlike anywhere else.
Overview
Dominica is the most strikingly different island in the Eastern Caribbean. Unlike its neighbours, it was never shaped by mass tourism — no major resort strip, no white-sand beach scene. What it has instead is extraordinary: the most intact tropical rainforest in the Lesser Antilles, 365 rivers, active volcanic features, and Boiling Lake — the world's second-largest boiling lake, accessible only by a demanding 6-hour jungle hike. Hot and cold sulphuric springs bubble up at Wotten Waven; Champagne Reef offers one of the world's most unique snorkelling experiences as volcanic vents make the water genuinely fizzy. Dominica is also the best place in the Caribbean — possibly the world — for year-round sperm whale watching.

Top Beaches
Champagne Beach (Pointe Michel)
Volcanic vents release warm, fizzy bubbles through the black sand into the sea. One of the Caribbean's most unique snorkel experiences.
Soufrière Bay
Black-sand beach at the foot of the Soufrière volcano. Serene and beautiful, with volcanic thermal activity nearby.
Picard Beach
The longest black-sand beach on the island on the northwest coast. Beautiful and deserted.
Must Eat
Callaloo Soup
A thick, nourishing soup made from dasheen (taro) leaves, okra, coconut milk, and crab or fish. A Caribbean staple done brilliantly in Dominica.
Provisions with Saltfish
A hearty plate of boiled ground provisions (yam, dasheen, green banana, breadfruit) with salted codfish — the everyday Dominican lunch.
Fresh Coconut Water & Breadfruit
Dominica's interior produces extraordinary tropical fruit. Fresh coconut vendors are everywhere; roasted breadfruit is sold roadside — starchy, rich, and delicious.
💡 DIY Tip
Take a $10 taxi to the Sulphur Springs at Wotten Waven — you can soak in natural volcanic hot pools for a few dollars admission without a tour. For Champagne Reef (one of the Caribbean's best snorkel spots), take a $15 taxi to Pointe Michel and snorkel straight from the beach — gear can be rented on-site. No boat needed.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
The Boiling Lake hike is a 6-hour, expert-level jungle trek — a guided ship excursion is essential as guides are required and navigation is complex. Whale-watching trips need specialist boats and marine biologists. Book these as ship excursions. For hot springs and Champagne Reef, go independently.
