Curaçao (Willemstad)
The Caribbean's most colourful capital, world-class wreck diving, and Dutch colonial charm.
Overview
Curaçao is a Dutch Caribbean island 40 miles north of Venezuela and, crucially, just outside the hurricane belt — giving it near-consistent sunshine year-round. Its capital, Willemstad, is a UNESCO World Heritage city split in two by St. Anna Bay: the Punda side (east) has the famous candy-coloured Dutch colonial waterfront (the Handelskade) and the Floating Market; Otrobanda (west) is where cruise ships dock. The two halves are connected by the iconic Queen Emma floating pontoon bridge, which swings open for passing ships. The island's underwater world — including the SS Antilla wreck, one of the Caribbean's best dives — is world-class.

Mambo Beach
The most popular beach club — full facilities, beach bars, watersports. 15 min by taxi from town.
Cas Abao
Quieter, more remote beach with gorgeous snorkelling offshore. 25 min by taxi — worth the trip.
Klein Curaçao
Uninhabited island 1.5 hrs offshore. Pristine white sand, incredible snorkelling and diving. Day trip only.
Must Eat
Keshi Yena
The island's national dish — a gouda cheese shell stuffed with spiced meat or chicken. Rich and uniquely Curaçaoan.
Lionfish Ceviche
Invasive lionfish are a local delicacy — sweet, firm white flesh served raw with citrus and peppers at harbour-side restaurants.
Rijsttafel
Dutch-Indonesian rice table — a colonial legacy that thrives in Curaçao. Try it at Gouverneur De Rouville for harbour views.
💡 DIY Tip
Walk across the Queen Emma floating pontoon bridge to the Punda for free — it's one of the Caribbean's most charming streets. Browse Handelskade's waterfront, visit the Floating Market where Venezuelan boats sell fresh produce, then walk 10 minutes to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (oldest active synagogue in the Americas, 1651). Beaches are best reached by taxi.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Willemstad is excellent for DIY — very walkable and photogenic. Book a ship excursion for Klein Curaçao boat trips (uninhabited island only accessible by sea) or guided diving/snorkel tours to the Antilla wreck.
