Overview
Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise destination on Mexico's southern Caribbean coast, serving the Yucatán Peninsula region. The pier complex has a large beach, restaurants, and a swimming pool — but just 3 km away is the genuine Mexican fishing village of Mahahual, a relaxed stretch of palapa bars, local restaurants, and beach clubs on a beautiful stretch of turquoise Caribbean coast. Costa Maya is also the closest port to the ancient Mayan site of Chacchoben (the best-preserved archaeological zone in the area), the Bacalar Lagoon (the stunning 'Lake of Seven Colors'), and the Great Mayan Reef. It's significantly less crowded than Cozumel and offers an authentic, unhurried experience.

Mahahual Beach
The long stretch of beach running through the village — clear turquoise water, palapa bars, and a completely relaxed atmosphere. Walk or $5 taxi from the pier.
Costa Maya Pier Beach
The pier itself has a large beach and pool complex — convenient and lively, though more commercialised than Mahahual.
Banco Chinchorro
Remote atoll and biosphere reserve 30 km offshore — the largest coral atoll in the Northern Hemisphere. World-class snorkelling and diving, accessible only by organised tour.

Grilled Fish Tacos in Mahahual
Fresh-caught fish grilled over charcoal and served in handmade tortillas with cabbage, lime, and habanero salsa at the beach shacks in Mahahual village. $2–3 per taco.
Ceviche de Caracol
Conch ceviche — fresh conch marinated in lime juice with jalapeño, tomato, and red onion. Served cold from the beachside seafood restaurants in the village.
Michelada
Beer mixed with lime, hot sauce, Worcestershire, and a salted rim — Mexico's ultimate seaside refreshment. Every beach bar serves them.
💡 DIY Tip
Walk or take the $5 taxi to Mahahual village — it's a completely different experience from the pier complex, genuinely local, and the beach is just as beautiful. Rent a golf cart ($40/hour) to explore the coast and find your own stretch of deserted beach. The Chacchoben Mayan ruins are accessible by private taxi ($80–100 round trip for up to 4 people, 45 min each way) without booking a ship tour.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Mahahual beach and the village are very easy independently. Book a ship excursion for Bacalar Lagoon (2.5 hours away — transport timing makes it risky independently on a port day) or for Chacchoben ruins with a guide (limited on-site explanation makes a guide worthwhile). Banco Chinchorro snorkel requires a specialist tour.
