Cartagena
A UNESCO walled city of candy-coloured colonial houses, massive Spanish fortresses, and Caribbean warmth.
Overview
Cartagena de Indias is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas. The walled Old City (Centro Histórico) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a perfectly preserved 16th–17th century Spanish colonial city encircled by Las Murallas, massive defensive walls that took 200 years to build. Inside, narrow cobblestone streets wind past buildings painted in vivid yellow, pink, blue, and orange, decorated with bougainvillaea. Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a vast fortress looming over the city, is one of the largest Spanish colonial fortifications ever built. The island of Cartagena also has excellent Caribbean beaches a short boat ride away.

Top Beaches
Playa Blanca (Barú Island)
A stunning white sand beach 30 min by boat from Bocagrande. One of the most beautiful beaches in Colombia — but busy in high season.
Islas del Rosario
An archipelago of 30 islands with coral reefs — 1.5 hours by boat. Excellent snorkelling. Best done as a day trip.
Bocagrande Beach
The local beach strip 10 min from the Old City — busy, urban, but convenient for a quick dip.
Must Eat
Ceviche Costeño
Caribbean coast-style ceviche with shrimp and salty costeño cheese — different from Peruvian ceviche, served warm. From any plaza-side restaurant.
Bandeja Paisa
Colombia's national feast — red beans, rice, chicharrón, fried egg, avocado, and plantain on one enormous plate.
Palenqueras' Fruit Bowls
Buy a colourful bowl of fresh tropical fruit from the Palenqueras — women in traditional Afro-Colombian dress selling in the Old City plazas. The mangoes are extraordinary.
💡 DIY Tip
Take a taxi to the Old City ($6–8 from the pier) and spend the morning walking the historic centre for free. Climb the city walls (Las Murallas) for great views; walk to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas ($6 entry). Then take a water taxi from the Muelle de los Pegasos pier to Playa Blanca for the afternoon.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
The Old City is very walkable independently once you taxi from the pier. Book a ship excursion for Islas del Rosario snorkel/beach day trips — the boat logistics are complex and excursion boats depart early. Guided fortress tours also add considerable depth.
