Bonaire (Kralendijk)
The diver's paradise of the southern Caribbean — shore diving from dawn to dusk with flamingos for company.
Overview
Bonaire is a small Dutch Caribbean island sitting well south of the hurricane belt, just off the coast of Venezuela. It's widely regarded as one of the top shore-diving destinations on the planet — virtually the entire coastline is a marine park, the water is gin-clear, and you can simply walk in from the beach to world-class reefs. Non-divers find Bonaire equally rewarding: its flat landscape, salt flats turning pink with flamingos, and Washington Slagbaai National Park offer a very different Caribbean experience. Cruise ships dock in Kralendijk, the tidy Dutch-Caribbean capital.

Top Beaches
Pink Beach (Playa Chikitu)
Crushed pink coral gives the sand a blush hue. Calm, clear water perfect for snorkelling straight off the beach. About 12 km south of Kralendijk.
Lac Bay
A broad, sheltered lagoon on the east coast — world-class windsurfing and kitesurfing. The bay is lined with mangroves and the water is bright turquoise.
Eden Beach
Just north of Kralendijk — a free public beach with a dive site right offshore. Good for snorkelling and calm swimming.
Must Eat
Keshi Yena
A whole Edam or Gouda cheese hollowed out and stuffed with spiced meat — a Dutch Antillean classic. Find it at local restaurants along the waterfront in Kralendijk.
Fresh Mahi-Mahi
Local catch grilled over charcoal and served with funchi (cornmeal porridge) and pika (hot pepper sauce). Try it at It Rains Fishes or Capriccio.
Guiambo Soup
A hearty okra-based fish soup — the comfort food of the Dutch Antilles. Deeply savoury with local fish and vegetables.
💡 DIY Tip
Rent a jeep or 4WD ($60–80/day) and explore Washington Slagbaai National Park in the north — the park covers a third of the island and has deserted beaches, flamingo lagoons, and iguanas everywhere. Entry is $45/person. Stop at Goto Meer salt lake on the way back to see the wild flamingo colony up close (no tour needed).
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Bonaire is the most DIY-friendly dive destination in the Caribbean — you can rent gear at the pier and walk into world-class reefs without a guide. Book a ship excursion only for beginners' dive courses or if you want a guided multi-site dive day with tank fills handled.
