Antigua
365 beaches — one for every day of the year — plus the most beautifully preserved Georgian naval harbour in the Caribbean.
Overview
Antigua is one of the jewels of the Eastern Caribbean. The island famously claims 365 beaches — one for every day of the year — and while that's poetic licence, the reality is remarkably close: every road seems to lead to another cove of white sand and turquoise water. The capital, St. John's, has a lively waterfront market and colourful wooden architecture. But Antigua's crown jewel is English Harbour on the south coast: a perfectly preserved 18th-century British Royal Navy dockyard (Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) surrounded by dramatic hillside fortifications with views across the Caribbean — an extraordinary sight even by Caribbean standards.

Top Beaches
Dickenson Bay
Antigua's most popular beach — 1.5 km of white sand on the north coast, calm clear water, beach bars. 20 min by taxi from the pier.
Half Moon Bay
Consistently ranked among the Caribbean's best beaches. Remote, uncrowded, and spectacular — on the eastern Atlantic coast. Worth the 30-min drive.
Pigeon Point Beach
Quiet, pretty cove near English Harbour with excellent snorkelling. Combine with a Nelson's Dockyard visit.
Must Eat
Fungee & Pepperpot
Antigua's national dish — cornmeal and okra fungee (similar to polenta) served with slow-cooked pepperpot stew. A taste of genuine island home cooking.
Ducana with Saltfish
Sweet potato and coconut dumplings wrapped in banana leaf, steamed and served with salted cod and aubergine — an Antiguan Sunday morning staple.
Wadadli Beer
Antigua's own lager, brewed locally. Cold from a beach bar at Dickenson Bay is the only correct way to drink it.
💡 DIY Tip
Take a shared taxi from the pier to English Harbour ($15 each way per person) for a half-day: explore Nelson's Dockyard (free grounds, $8 museum), climb Shirley Heights for the best panoramic view in the Caribbean, then stop at Pigeon Point Beach on the way back. This covers Antigua's highlights and beats any ship tour price.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
English Harbour and Shirley Heights are accessible independently by taxi but a ship excursion can combine them with a beach stop. Book a ship excursion for sailing days or catamaran circumnavigation tours — Antigua has exceptional sailing waters and a nautical circumnavigation shows off the 365 beaches from the water.
